Deep inelastic scattering in Yb isotopes

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society

A systematic program is under way at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory to study neutron rich nuclei near {sup 176}Yb using deep inelastic scattering. Analysis of target-like data from a recent experiment at GAMMASPHERE using the reaction {sup 176}Yb + {sup 48}Ca demonstrates that this method is capable of producing high spin states in a number of nuclei such as {sup 175,177,178}Yb. The use of a position sensitive silicon detector allows for Doppler correction of gamma rays from the reaction products and also serves as a coincidence filter, resulting in clean spectra. In this talk we will discuss the results of this experiment and one using a heavier projectile which should result in the population of higher spin states in neutron rich nuclei.
