Superdeformation in {sup 198}Po at GAMMASPHERE

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:255620

A previous experiment at Early Implementation GAMMASPHERE using the {sup 174}Yb({sup 29}Si,5n){sup 29}{sub 198}{sub 84}Po reaction revealed a candidate for a superdeformed (SD) band. A follow-up experiment at GAMMASPHERE with the same reaction has been performed and the results will be discussed. A large number of SD and Ml rotational bands have been discovered in recent years in nuclei near Z{approximately}79-83 and N{approximately}110-116, including Bi (Z=83) nuclei. Calculations by Bonche, et al., and Satula, et al., predict second minima for prolate deformation with {Beta} 0.5 for the polonium nuclei.
