Coincidence measurement of pion double charge exchange in {sup 4}He

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:255580
Previous inclusive measurements suggest that pion double charge exchange in {sup 3}He and {sup 4}He in the {Delta} resonance region is dominated by a sequential single charge exchange mechanism involving quasi-free nucleons. In the present experiment, we observed protons over a wide range of angles in coincidence with the outgoing pion in the reaction {pi}{sup +} + {sup 4}He {r_arrow} {pi}{sup -} + 4p at T{sub {pi}+} = 240 MeV. The outgoing pion was detected at 0{sub {pi}-} = 32 {degrees}. More than 50 thousand pion and proton coincidence events were collected, as well as single arm pion-only data, to connect with previous measurements. Enough coincidence were collected to provide better than 10% statistics in each energy and angle bin. Preliminary energy and angle distributions of the coincident protons will be presented.
