Analyzing powers for the reaction pp{r_arrow}pn{pi}+ near threshold

We present results from kinematically complete measurements of the analyzing powers and differential cross sections for pp{r_arrow}pn{phi}{sub +}. These measurements were performed at the IUCF Cooler, using a stored beam with {approximately}60% polarization and an internal hydrogen gas jet target. The reaction nucleons were detected in coinc dence in a neutron hodoscope and a charged particle arm consisting of three drift chambers and a scintillator stack. Pion kinematics were deduced from measurement of the proton and neutron momenta. We utilized seven beam energies ranging from 293.8 MeV (close to the threshold for pion production of 292.3 MeV) to 330.5 MeV. Analyzing powers and full pion angular distributions were measured at 300.4, 320.5 and 330.5 MeV. The data will supplement a previous experiment that had found nearly isotropic pion angular distributions below 300 MeV and moderate anisotropy at 320 MeV, in contrast to the pp{r_arrow}d {phi}{sup +} data, which show significant anisotropies and analyzing powers at equivalent pion energies.
