Nuclear structure effects on sub-barrier fusion reactions

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:255526
The study of heavy-ion induced fusion reactions at sub-barrier energies reveals a rich and interesting interplay between reaction dynamics and nuclear structure. Considerable progress has been made in recent years in our understanding of the sub-barrier fusion enhancement by including additional degrees of freedom, such as static deformation, vibrational motion and nucleon transfer reactions. Recent measurements involving transitional nuclei exhibit especially strong enhancement effects. The influence of these processes on the fusion of very heavy nuclei using stable and radioactive beams will be discussed.
