Measurement of the {sup 7}Li(N,{lambda}){sup 8}Li cross section at E{sub n}=1-1000 eV
- and others
The flux of high-energy solar neutrinos from the decay of {sup 8}B is proportional to the rate of the{sup 7}Be{sub p, {gamma}}{sup 8}B reaction. This rate must be extrapolated from the existing cross section data (E{sub p}> 100 keV) to solar energies (E{sub p}{congruent} 20 keV). A recent measurement of a substantial analyzing power in the {sup 7}Li(p,{gamma}){sup 8}Be reaction has been used to question the extrapolation of the {sup 7}Be(p,{gamma}){sup 8}B cross section as pure s-wave capture. Depending on the source of this effect, p-wave capture may also arise in the {sup 7}Li(n,{gamma}){sup 8}Li reaction, the mirror reaction to {sup 7}Be(p,{gamma}){sup 8}B. We have measured the yield of the 2.033-MeV gamma ray from the {sup 7}Li(n,{gamma}){sup 8}Li reaction using an established, well-calibrated intrinsic-Ge spectrometer system. The experiment was conducted at the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator (ORELA) at neutron energies E{sub n}=1-1000 eV. The {sup 10}B(n,{gamma}){sup 11}B reaction was measured simultaneously, and its yield was used to determine the neutron flux. The cross section for the {sup 7}Li(n,{gamma}){sup 11}Li reaction was determined relative to that of the {sup 10}B(n,{gamma}){sup 11}B reaction. These data will be presented, and the implications for the {sup 7}Be(p,{gamma}){sup 8}B reaction discussed.
