Enhancement of low-mass dipletions in heavy-io collisions

Using the relativistic transport model for the expansion stage of heavy ion collisions at CERN/SPS energies, we study the production of dileptons with invariant masses below GeV/c{sup 2} We find that to explain quantitatively the recently observed enhancement of low-mass dileptons in the S+Au collision at 200 GeV/nucleon by the CERES collaboration, it is essential to include the modification of vector meson properties, in particular the decrease of their masses, in hot and dense hadronic matter.
