High spin and signature inversion in {sup 76}Br and {sup 78}Br

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:255474
High-spin states in the odd-odd nucleus {sup 76}Br were populated with the reaction {sup 63}Cu({sup 16}O,n2p), using a 69 MeV{sup 16} O,n2p beam from the Pittsburgh EN-tandem, and in {sup 78}Br with the reaction {sup 70}Zn({sup 11}B,p2n), using a 45, MeV {sup 11}B beam from the FSU FN-tandem. The Pitt multidetector array with six Compton-suppressed HPGe detectors and the Pitt-FSU array with 10 Compton-supressed HPGe detectors were used to collect {gamma}-{gamma} coincidene data for {sup 76}Br and {sup 78}Br, respectively. In both nuclei, the level schemes have been extended considerably, and when possible multipolarities have been investigated using DCO ratios. The features of the level schemes, particularly the signature inversions in the yrast bands will be compared to the results of cranked Woods-Saxon, Strutinsky shell-model calculations with self-consistent pairing.
