The magnetic presheath boundary condition with E{times}B drifts
- Plasma Fusion Center, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139 (United States)
It is demonstrated rigorously that the effects on a one-dimensional, collisionless, magnetic presheath with oblique magnetic field {bold B} of a uniform tangential electric field, causing a drift {bold v}{sub {ital D}}={bold E{times}B}/{ital B}{sup 2}, are equivalent to a transformation to a frame moving {ital tangential} to the surface. Therefore, in particular, the Chodura solution with parallel velocity {ital v}{sub {parallel}}={ital c}{sub {ital s}} (the sound speed) is transformed into a solution with {ital v}{sub {parallel}}={ital c}{sub {ital s}}+{ital v}{sub {ital D}}/tan{alpha}, where {alpha} is the field angle to the surface. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
