Residential use of compact fluorescent lamps

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:254501

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) have been promoted by many electric utilities through demand-side management (DSM) programs. CFLs offer significant advantages in terms of energy savings (up to 75 % less energy use than incandescent lamps) and life (up to 10 times longer). In order to provide a better understanding of customer responses to these utility DSM programs and market infrastructure, EPRI sponsored two studies, to this end. Results of over 500 interviews showed that customer, utility, and retailer perception problems exist with current CFL products and the way they are brought to market. This paper summarizes the results of these studies.
