We present the spin structure functions {ital g}{sup {ital p}}{sub 1}({ital x}) and the preliminary results for {ital g}{sup {ital p}}{sub 1}({ital x}) from SLAC experiment E143 at 29.1 GeV along with a brief description of the experiment. These new data are consistent with the Bjorken sum rule; however they do not support the Ellis-Jaffe sum rules. These new data on the proton indicated that the spin fraction carried by the quarks is 0.29{plus_minus}0.10 consistent with other experiments at CERN and SLAC. {copyright} {ital 1995 American Institute of Physics.}
