Recently the high electron spin polarization (ESP) photocathodes which have also high quantum efficiencies (QE) have been developed in Japan. These improvements were achieved using new techniques of a resonant absorption and a modulated doping, which are applied to a strained GaAs grown on GaAsP and an AlGaAs-GaAs superlattice, respectively. The former photocathode provides the QE of 1.0{percent} with the ESP of 85{percent} at the laser wavelength of 866 nm. The latter one does the QE of 0.5{percent} with the ESP of 71{percent} at 757 nm. Using a new type of strained-layer superlattice cathode, the ESP of 83{percent} which is higher than that of our previous superlattices was observed. The development of photocathodes not only with a high ESP but also with a high QE are discussed. {copyright} {ital 1995 American Institute of Physics.}
