Rigid requirements are imposed on the magnet system of a fusion reactor. The magnet system workability is determined in many respects by the reliability of electric insulation subjected to the joint action of irradiation, considerable mechanical loads, low temperatures, deep vacuum, and high electric voltages. Load-generating facilities based on the interaction of electromagnetic coils are, as a rule, compact and easily controllable. These are, for example, the electromagnetic presses intended for mechanical tests of various materials. A press with superconducting coils allows such testing at cryogenic temperatures. In this case, the operation expenditures decrease sufficiently for the stationary operation mode. To increase the efficiency and reliability of this facility, the load scheme of the coils in repulsion is preferable. In the paper, the optimum dimensions of such a magnet system are determined taking into account strength restrictions. The design peculiarities of the superconducting electromagnetic 900 kN press are considered.
