High-resolution Raman spectra were measured on two solid solution series of rare-earth sesquisulfides: The La{sub 2}S{sub 3}-Gd{sub 2}S{sub 3} sequence with the orthorhombic {alpha} structure and the Dy{sub 2}S{sub 3}-Er{sub 2}S{sub 3} sequence with the monoclinic {delta} structure. Precise line widths, measured on the most intense line, showed a pronounced maximum in the middle of the solid solution series, demonstrating the relationship between Raman line width and structural disorder. The magnitude of the effect scaled with the difference in ionic radii of the cations making up the solid solution.
