Within the framework of the safety analysis for a German type BWR selected beyond-design basis events are analyzed. The analyses were performed with the Nuclear Plant Analyzer ATLAS (ATHLET Analyses Simulator) which was developed by GRS. The Nuclear Plant Analyzer (ATLAS) is based on a qualified BWR input deck which was developed within the frame of the project ``Technical Assistance of Suitable Supervision and Licensing for Nuclear Reactors`` sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety. With this input deck it is possible to analyze all essential accident scenarios in a short time as detected in risk and safety studies by using the interactive features of the analysis simulator. The analyses are performed with the five equation model of the process model ATHLET. The behavior of the reactor vessel, the main steam and main feedwater lines as well as the behavior of the containment are investigated for beyond-design basis events to evaluate accident management procedures. Analyses are performed for events initiated by the loss of the main heat sink or the main feedwater with additional failures. The results of the loss of main heat sink transients show that availability of only one alternate depressurization valve can control these scenarios. The loss of feedwater transients can partly be controlled by automatic operational systems or by an accident management procedure which maximizes injection rates of operational systems.
