Contamination of soil and groundwater by chromium has occurred in many industrial areas. In the natural aqueous environment chromium exists at significant levels in two oxidation states: trivalent (Cr[III]) and hexavalent (Cr[VI]). Furthermore, CR(VI) occurs as the oxyanions HCrO{sub 4}{sup {minus}} and CrO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}} which are highly soluble and mobile in groundwater. Therefore, with respect to potential human exposures, the presence of Cr(VI) in soil and ground water is generally the primary concern at hazardous waste sites with chromium contamination. The investigations described herein focused on the potential removal of Cr(VI) from soil using an electrokinetic process.
