OSTI ID:250935
J-Field on the Gunpowder Neck Peninsula at the Aberdeen Proving Ground has contamination resulting from past field activities at the facility. Disposal operations conducted in this region include: toxic burning pits, white phosphorus burning pits, riot control burning pits, South Beach, Demolition Ground, South Beach trench, Robins Point Demolition Ground, Robins Point Tower Site, and the Ruins Site. Argonne National Laboratory is conducting a Focused Feasibility Study (FFS) to identify and evaluate remedial technologies that may be implemented to address contamination at the Toxic Burning Pits (TBP) area at J-Field, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. As part of the FFS, several treatability studies were performed to collect additional data on potential technologies and determine their applicability on conditions specific to the TBP area. This paper summarizes the results soil washing and enhancements to soil washing portions of the study. On the basis of their concentrations in the untreated TBP soils and degree of environmental impact, the primary heavy metals of concern for the FFS were copper, lead, and zinc.
