A number of significant synthetic methods based on chromium(II)-mediated carbon-carbon bond formation have been developed in the last 10 years and these methods have seen extensive application in natural product synthesis. The following will be described: recent progress on the development and application in natural product synthesis of a one-step method for the synthesis of E-alkenylstannanes from carbonyl compounds; new developments in stannyl- and silyl-substituted organochromium reagents including an unusual one-step highly chemoselective method for the homologation of aldehydes to methyl ketones and the synthesis and aspects of the chemistry of 1,1-bis(trimethylsilyl)alkenes investigations in the area of chromium-mediated nickel-catalysed intramolecular carbometallation chemistry and tandem cyclisation reactions.
