Geochemical factors influencing the formation of the composition of relict C{sub 17}-C{sub 20} alkanes in caustobioliths
A study of the concentrations of normal and isoprenoidal C{sub 17}-C{sub 20} alkanes of different causto-bioliths has shown that crude oils and condensates, compared with dispersed and concentrated organic matter (OM), are characterized by a narrower range of ratios of these hydrocarbons, which is probably due to the chemical homogeneity of the OM taking part in processes of crude oil formation. The ratio of normal alkanes to isoprenoidal alkanes in crude oils and condensates mainly reflects the levels of catagenetic conversion of OM of source deposits and subsequent physiochemical differentiation of the products of these conversions. An examination of the pristane/phytane and (pristane + phytane)/(n-C{sub 17} + n-C{sub 18}) ratios together with the degree of catagenesis of dispersed organic matter makes it possible within large tectonic zones to separate crude oils and condensates into geochemical groups according to the conditions of their formation and their origin.
