Cadmium-zinc-telluride for radiation monitoring of gaseous effluent
- Aurora Technologies Corporation, San Diego, CA (United States); and others
The characteristics of cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) detectors are analyzed for use in nuclear power plant vent stacks to monitor noble gases over the range of radiation fields-from those encountered in normal plant operation to those postulated for a worst case accident. Monitoring noble-gas effluent over this range is required for an nuclear power plants by U.S. NRC Regulatory Guide 1.97, Rev. 2. Some plants have installed ionization chambers in the vent stacks, but most plants draw a sample from the vent to an off-line monitor. The off-line monitors employ a combination of scintillation detectors and some use cadmium-telluride detectors in the current mode for the highest ranges. The monitor contemplated herein is a single, small CZT detector, which covers the entire range, that is mounted in the vent stack with signal-conditioning electronics and isotopic sources for periodic detector calibration and routine operation checks.
