Polycrystalline Ag{sup +}-{beta}{double_prime}-Alumina tubes were prepared from Na{sup +}-{beta}{double_prime}-Alumina by ion exchange and characterized by XRD, DTA, TGA, SEM and EDX analyses. Applying tubuler Ag{sup +}-{beta}{double_prime}-Alumina as solid electrolyte, metallic Ag as a solid reference electrode and porous Pt as a working electrode, fully solid galvanic cells were constructed as electrochemical SO{sub x} sensors Pt, Ag{vert_bar}Ag{sup +}-{beta}{double_prime}-Alumina{vert_bar}porous Pt, SO{sub 2}-SO{sub 3}-O{sub 2}, Pt. The sensors were tested in a small commercial-type testing system. The Nernst emf response of the sensor to the SO{sub 2} partial pressure is fairly consistent with the theoretical prediction in the working temperature range of 500-700{degrees}C and the SO{sub 2} concentration range of 10 to 1000 ppm. The response time is usually about 5-10 min. The experimental results indicate the potential of this SO{sub 2} sensor in practical use.
