Design features for full MOX operation in advanced PWR

Conference ·
OSTI ID:248137
The feasibility of full MOX core Operation in an advanced PWR (APWR) is studied from the nuclear, thermal hydraulic, fuel and safety design viewpoints. A full MOX core in the APWR plant is shown to be feasible by employing 109 Ag-In-Cd control rods and enriched {sup 10}B in the chemical shim. However, the control rod optimization results show that a reduction of about 24 control rod clusters could be achieved by employing B{sub 4}C/Ag-In-Cd hybrid rods instead of the current Ag-In-Cd ones and by using the nuclear thermal hydraulic coupling methodology in the near future. Furthermore, the full MOX core can be designed using a single Pu content per assembly and without any burnable absorbers. The design features for full MOX operation in the APWR are summarized in this report
