During 1995, 423 nuclear power plants were operable worldwide. Total nuclear generating capacity was 343.3 GWe net--an increase of over 6% from five years ago. Total nuclear generating capacity is expected to increase to over 367 GWe net by the year 2000. A total of 97 plants are either under construction or planned to begin commercial operation by the year 2010. Although these plants are dispersed throughout 16 countries, most of the new plants will be built in China, France, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the Ukraine. China, India and South Korea plan to more than double their current number of plants of 2010. Conversely, there are 98 plants scheduled for decommissioning by the year 2010. Most of these decommissioned plants with new nuclear units, while the United Kingdom and the U.S. do not plan to replace this lost capacity.
