EPRI has completed an engineering and economic evaluation of Ahlstrom Pyropower`s circulating PFBC power plant technology for three nominal generating capacities, 100 MWe, 160 MWe, and 350 MWe. The effects of several process parameters were investigated, sulfur retentions from 90% to 98%; subcritical and supercritical steam conditions; coal type; and the incorporation of a temperature control unit in the air inlet stream. Pilot plant tests indicate that ammonia injection into the boiler reduces NO{sub x} to around 0.05 lbs/MBtu. For the 350 MWe unit Total Plant Costs were comfortably below $1,000/kW with heat rates as low as 9,300 Btu/kWh. This cost and heat rate is projected to be appreciably lower than can be achieved with a conventional PC unit. These advantages result in the circulating PFBC unit having a lower cost of electricity. When used in repowering applications the Total Plant Cost for the circulating PFBC may be reduced by as much as third to closer to $700/kW.
