A new special stability control termed CAPS improves power system stability by exploiting the time-overvoltage capability of large shunt capacitor banks. During low voltage emergencies, several series groups of wye-connected capacitor banks are shorted to increase reactive power output. The authors describe successful commissioning tests on a 241.5-kV, 168-MVAr capacitor bank.
