A procedure for accepting small lots of machined parts on the machine tool with no need for post-process inspection has been developed. In this procedure, a positional error model of the machine is first developed. This model is used to determine the uncertainty of the machine position based on the variances of the individual error elements. The positional uncertainty can be extended to cover touch probe measurement uncertainty. This approach was tested on a set of turned parts. The results show that this method can be used to estimate the uncertainty of an on-machine inspection process and to certify this process.
