Interactions of 2.25 TeV gold nuclei in targets ranging from {sub 1}H to {sub 82}Pb

An array of ion chambers, Cherenkov counters and multiwire proportional counters has been used to study the interactions of 11.4 GeV/n {sub 79}Au nuclei accelerated at the Brookhaven AGS, Exp. 869. This array was able to resolve the charges of the heaviest fragment produced in interactions in targets of CH (polyethelene), {sub 6}C, {sub 13}Al, {sub 29}Cu, {sub 50}Sn and {sub 82}Pb; and thus in hydrogen. The authors are therefore able to determine the total charge changing cross sections in each target and compare them with those determined at lower Bevalac energies. They can also determine the partial cross sections for the production of nuclei with charge pickup and fragments with charges down to some 25 to 30 charge units below the charge of the projectile and compare them with the values observed at lower energies. In addition, by placing a fragmentor in the incident beam, the authors generated statistically significant secondary beams of projectiles with Z {ge} 70. The interactions of these projectiles in all the targets will also be studied. Here the authors will report some preliminary results on the dependence of the total charge changing cross sections as a function of target mass number, and discuss some of the partial cross sections.
