Preliminary upper limit on BR(D{sup {+-}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup {+-}}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -})

Neutral current interactions have been shown to conserve strangeness to a high precision by studies of K meson decays and flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) are forbidden in the Standard model. The authors present a preliminary upper limit on the charm changing neutral current process D{sup {+-}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup {+-}}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} based on the analysis of a small fraction of data from Fermilab experiment E791, taken during the 1991-2 fixed target run and using a 500 GeV/c {pi}{sup {minus}} beam incident on a segmented target.
