New high spin states in neutron deficient {sup 200}Po

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society

Neutron deficient Po nuclei are an excellent laboratory for the study of the onset of collective motion. With 2 protons beyond the Z=82 shell closure, the low-lying states of {sup 210-202}Po display a simple {pi}(h{sub 9/2}){sup 2} configuration. As the neutron valency increases the onset of collective motion is expected. Earlier work has shown an abrupt transition to a simple vibrational structure at {sup 196}Po up to J{sup {pi}}=8{sup +}. In order to study further the transition from single-particle to collective motion, the {sup 176}Yb({sup 29}Si,5n){sup 200}Po reaction was measured at the 88 inche cyclotron at LBL using HERA. The authors have extended the level scheme to at least 5 MeV in excitation and J=28{h_bar} and have performed systematic searches for both superdeformed and collective oblate structures. The results of these searches, as well as the systematical behavior of Po nuclei, will be discussed.
