Transitent field calibration for Pt in gadolinium

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:243904
The Rutgers calibration of the hyperfine transient field has been extended to heavier nuclei recoiling at higher velocities through gadolinium. In experiments conducted using the Rutgers FN-Tandem and the Yale ESTU-Tandem, the 2{sub 1}{sup +} states in {sup 194,196,198}Pt were Coulomb-excited and allowed to recoil through magnetized gadolinium. Gamma-ray angular precessions for the three 2{sub 1}{sup +}{r_arrow}0{sub 1}{sup +} transitions in the recoiling Pt ions were measured simultaneously. Average values for the magnitude of the transient field were extracted from the precession data and combined with values obtained for recoiling {sup 148}Nd that had been co-deposited on the Pt targets. The validity of the Rutgers and Chalk River field calibrations in the ranges 1.9 {le}v/vo{le}4.6 and 60{le}Z{le}78 will be discussed.
