New limits on magnetic monopole flux from the IMB proton decay detector

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:243820

An improved limit of the flux of magnetic monopoles in the vicinity of the solar system is obtained using an additional 623 live days from the IMB-3 data set. To obtain this limit the authors have assumed that monopoles strongly catalyze proton decay into charged energetic daughter particles (the Rubakov effect.) Flux limits are obtained for monopole velocities from 10{sup {minus}9} c to 10{sup {minus}1} and for monopole-nucleon cross sections between 0.1 mb and 100 mb. The authors obtain limits that approach, within a factor of two, the Parker Bound.
