New chiral low energy theorems for {pi}-N scattering

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:243804
The authors apply current algebra techniques to the {pi}-N system and show that an appropriate axial vector Ward idendity predicts, for example, the leading low energy dependence of the {pi}-N forward scattering amplitude. It turns out, that to leading order in a chiral expansion the corresponding slope parameter for the isospin even amplitude is model independent and that it is determined by the pion nucleon sigma term. This theorem possibly provides an alternative method to extract the pion nucleon sigma term from {pi}-N scattering data.
