The large number of low-spin identical bands (IB) found among the adjacent odd- and even-Z rare-earth nuclei seems to run counter to the BCS pairing concept. To investigate if the standard models can correctly reproduce the odd-even difference in the moments of interia (MoI) of rotational bands, the authors have compared the experimental values with the results of pairing self-consistent Woods-Saxon cranking calculations. Using {sup 172}Yb as the reference core, these calculations correctly reproduce the identical bands based on the [402]5/2 and [404]7/2 proton orbitals in {sup 173}Lu, but not those based on the [514]9/2 orbital. Furthermore, for the [541]1/2 band, the calculations predict a change in the MoI of 28%; much larger than the experimental value of 8%. Thus, the non-identical bands pose an even more serious challenge for the conventional models than the identical bands.
