The authors present a comparative study for the excitation energy dependence of the compound nucleus spin distributions and evaporation residue cross sections in the reactions {sup 16}O+{sup 148}Sm and {sup 64}Ni+{sup 100}Mo populating {sup 164}Yb*. Earlier results are reviewed together with recent data in the bombarding energy range from below to slightly above the entrance channel Coulomb barrier. For the {sup 64}Ni+{sup 100}Mo reaction, an improved (over previous analyses) description of the fusion excitation function and spin distributions is given within a one-dimensional barrier penetration model with energy-dependent barriers. In both reactions, the exit-channel fractional cross sections as a function of the {sup 164}Yb* excitation energy exhibits features that correlate with trends in the compound nucleus spin distributions.
