Polarized proton beam acceleration at Fermilab

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society

Successful experimental tests of the Siberian snake concept at the IUCF cooler ring support the possibility of polarized proton beam acceleration to TeV energies. Using Siberian snakes, the SPIN collaboration studied the technical feasibility of accelerating a polarized beam to 150 GeV in the Fermilab Main Injector. The study found that a polarized proton beam can be accelerated in the Main Injector with about 75% polarization and about 10% of the unpolarized beam intensity. A second study is now being conducted for accelerating a polarized proton beam to 1 TeV in the Tevatron.
