Measurement of the beta-delayed alpha-particles from the broad 1{sup -} state at 9.6 MeV in {sup 16}O

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society

The authors have measured the beta-decay of {sup 16}N to the broad 1{sup {minus}} state at 9.6 MeV in {sup 16}O, by observing the beta-delayed alpha-particles and gamma-rays from a {sup 16}N (radioactive) beam, extracted from the MSU A1200 separator, and implanted into an array of four surface barrier Si detectors of 25-50 {mu}m thickness. A large volume (120%) hyperpure Ge detector was used to observe beta-delayed gamma-emission. They extract the beta-decay branching ratio of 1.3(3)x10{sup {minus}5} for this 1{sup {minus}} state. This measurement also allows the authors to extract the centroid of the broad alpha-particle spectrum of the 1{sup {minus}} state which is essential for estimating the {open_quotes}zero{close_quotes} target thickness line shape of this decay. These data where used to normalize and calibrate the recent Yale experiment of the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission of {sup 16}N.
