Momentum degradation in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:243663
A multiple scattering theory based optical model description of momentum loss in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented. The crucial significance of the imaginary component of the nucleon-nucleon transition matrix in accounting for longitudinal momentum transfer is demonstrated. Results obtained within this model are compared with Intranuclear Cascade (INC) calculations, as well as predictions from Vlasov-Uehling-Uhlenbeak, (VUU) and Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) simulations. Comparison is also made with experimental data where available. These indicate that the present model may be adequate in accounting for longitudinal momentum transfer in both proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions over a wide range of energies.
