Computer simulations of disoriented chiral condensates

Chiral symmetry may be restored in the region of dense, hot hadronic matter created in relativistic heavy ion collisions. When the matter expands and chiral symmetry is again broken, regions of {open_quotes}disoriented{close_quotes} chiral condensates might be formed, as suggested by Bjorken and others. The authors are studying the formation of chiral domains in an effective N = 4 sigma model during a quench through the phase transition by means of computer simulations of the condensate dynamics.
