The electrical conductivities of the sintered samples of Gd{sub 1{minus}x}A{sub x}MnO{sub 3} and Gd{sub 1{minus}x}A{sub x}CoO{sub 3} (A = Ca, Sr) were measured as a function of x in the temperature range 30 C to 1,000 C. The highest conductivity of around 400 S/cm at 1,000 C was found in Gd{sub 0.9}Sr{sub 0.1}CoO{sub 3}. The cathodic polarization of these oxide electrodes, sputtered on yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), was studied at 700--1,000 C in air. The lowest polarization was observed in GdCoO{sub 3}. The reactivity of gadolinium based perovskite oxides with YSZ was examined. No reaction product in the Gd{sub 1{minus}x}Ca{sub x}MnO{sub 3} (0.1{<=}x{<=}0.6) and YSZ couple was observed after 96h at 1,200 C. The Sr doped GdCoO{sub 3} was more reactive with YSZ and produced SrZrO{sub 3} at 850 C after 94h. On the other hand, no reaction product between GdCoO{sub 3} and YSZ was observed at 1,000 C for 96h.
