Status of SOFC development in Japan

This review deals with an overview of the SOFC R and D programs which are carried out in Japan. In the national project (the New Sunshine Program), the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization(NEDO) has integrated seven companies and three organizations which have performed the development of SOFC technology under the financial support of the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology(AIST) and three national laboratories take charge of the basic portion of the research. Utility companies of electric power and gas or petroleum industry are performing high level of R and D activities in cooperation with Japanese and foreign SOFC manufacturers and Universities. And basic researches on component material and fuel cell phenomena are carried out by many Universities and private companies in Japan.
