Utility companies invest in AM/FM/GIS (automated map ping/facilities management/geographic information systems) to provide quick customer response by efficiently tracking facility assets and automating the engineering and customer support functions. Union Gas of Chatham, Ontario, is going a step further by providing benefits outside of the engineering and drafting departments. Supervisory and field personnel now use map viewing software on PCs and mobile computers to easily access data in the AM/FM system. The objective was to equip field reps with as much information as the person at the office. A portable computer would provide for improved information access, reduce inquiries to central dispatch, and eliminate the microfilm media which was cumbersome at best.
