This survey treats neural networks as a mathematical model for parallel computation. It describes Hopfield networks and Boltzmann machines. Methods are presented for programming computations with these models. The computalional-energy function is introduced for the Hopfield model; the model is used for programming networks (the examples used are pattern recognition and the travelling salesman problem). Consensus functions are defined for the Boltzmann model, and it is shown how this model can be used for the travelling salesman problem. 73 refs.
