Methods for determination of high-priority pollutants, in particular phenol in natural waters and purified effluents, need to be developed and improved in order to resolve urgent ecological problems. Determination of phenol at the permissible concentration limit in aqueous media, as a rule, is impossible without preliminary concentration. Methods have been published for extraction and preconcentration of phenol using hydrophobic solvents. The effectiveness of the systems is improved by addition of electrolytes and non-electrolytes which increase the difference between the hydration energy of phenol and its solvation energy in the corresponding phases. The effect of hydration on the interphase distribution of phenol is also lowered during extraction of organic solvents which are completely water-miscible but form a separate phase when large amounts of electrolytes are dissolved in the aqueous phase. Such extracting agents have been used for recovery of inorganic and certain organic compounds. Systems with hydrophilic solvents have not been used previously for extraction of phenol. The use of hydrophilic extracting agents makes it possible to detect phenol photometrically directly in the extract (without a reextraction stage). The authors studied the extraction of phenol by hydrophilic alcohols and ketones in the presence of salts. 7 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs.
