A software program capable of compressing 3-D marine seismic datasets to less than 1% of their original size has been developed by Houston-based Chevron Petroleum Technology Co., (CPTC). Satellite transmission of compressed data from a seismic survey vessel to an onshore processing center now can be completed the same day it is acquired, while retaining the integrity and quality of the data. More importantly, the data retains the detailed, high resolution necessary for effective interpretation, providing improved fiscal and intellectual management of reservoir analysis. Considering that industry spends $2 billion a year for the acquisition of seismic data for oil and gas exploration, the technology offers extraordinary opportunities for cost savings and improved time efficiency.
