Static and dynamic strain aging in D0{sub 3}-ordered Fe{sub 3}Al

Iron aluminides have been investigated during the last years as candidates for high temperature application. Comparatively little attempt has been made to study the stress serrations which have been found occasionally in ordered alloys and have been studied frequently in disordered materials in a certain temperature range during deformation and are named Portevin-LeChatelier Effect (PLC). This is generally accepted to arise from dynamic strain aging (e.g., Estrin et al.). In ordered materials the mechanisms leading to jerky flow appear to be different for each material and different temperatures. In this study compression tests and in-situ slip line observations have been carried out on D0{sub 3}-ordered Fe{sub 3}Al in order to connect the slip line kinetics with the occurrence and kind of the serrations and with the high temperature maximum (HT-Max) in the critical resolved shear stress.
