An investigation evaluating the effect of firing both liquid and solid waste at mid-kiln on emissions was completed on two full-scale long, wet cement kilns. Effects of solid-waste composition and system operating conditions were also studied. Measurements were made for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), and products of incomplete combustion (PICs) in the stack and the cement kiln dust when firing both auxiliary fuels. The investigation showed that dioxin and furan emissions can be controlled when firing both liquid and solid hazardous waste containing large amounts of chlorine under worst case, permit limit conditions. Dioxin/furan formation appears to be a function of APCD temperature. Lower dioxin/furan emissions were observed at lower APCD temperatures. The data do not suggest that the original chemical composition of the waste influences the ultimate dioxin/furan emission levels.
