Title: A Modular Steady State Glow Discharge Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer System for the At-Line Analysis of Plutonium Metal

Glow discharge mass spectrometry (GDMS) has numerous industrial applications for the characterization of processed metals, such as steels and other alloys. GDMS is especially well suited for process control applications for metals, as solid conducting samples can be analyzed rapidly for a wide range of elements (Li to Am) with little sample preparation. Typically, a very small amount (several micrograms) of material is actually sputtered and mass-analyzed during GDMS analysis. We have developed, and are currently testing, a small quadrupole GDMS for rapid diagnostic analysis of plutonium metal. The quadrupole GDMS is glovebox-ready, and will directly analyze shards broken off the 'doughnut'-shaped electro-refined Pu metal ingots produced at TA-55. The quadrupole GDMS should easily provide detection limits that are sufficient for TA-55 analytical needs (1 ppm for most elements). The wide dynamic range of the detection system will permit quantitation from weight % to ppm in a single analytical run. Feedback from GDMS-based process monitoring will provide information for process improvement and process optimization at-line in the TA-55 Pu Facility.
