The progress of the irradiation program of EFTTRA is described. The results of the T4 test, the transmutation of americium in a MgAl{sub 2}O{sub 4}-based fuel, are presented. Extensive swelling of the fuel took place, probably due to the damage of the matrix by fission products and/or accumulation of helium because of alpha decay. The lessons learned from T4 and related EFTTRA experiments have lead to a more promising fuel concept based on a macrodispersion of an americium-containing host phase in the inert matrix. Two new experiments to test this and other concepts will be presented.
