The chemistry of liquid sodium is being studied to obtain fundamental information on chemical reactions which may lead to corrosion and, therefore, affect the use of sodium as a heat transfer fluid in nuclear reactors. The reactions of carbon-, nitrogen-, oxygen-, and hydrogen-bearing impurities in sodium are of especial interest in this connection.
