Title: Laboratory Investigations. Fluorination of UO{sub 2}-PuO{sub 2}-Fission Product Pellets in a 2-inch Diameter Fluidized-Bed Reactor

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:23134690

Studies are being carried out in a 2-in. dia. fluid-bed reactor to define conditions for the fluorination of UO{sub 2}-PuO{sub 2}-fission product (F.P.) pellets that would ensure a minimum retention of uranium and plutonium on the alumina particles of the fluidized bed. Two fluorinating agents are being evaluated for the processing of UO{sub 2}-PuU{sub 2}-fission product pellets: fluorine and bromine pentafluoride (BrF{sub 5}). One method for fluorination with fluorine utilizes a simultaneous oxidation-fluorination method whereby the fuel pellets are oxidized with oxygen in the lower zone of the fluid-bed reactor and the fines resulting from the oxidation are fluorinated with fluorine to volatile hexafluorides in the upper zone of the reactor. More than 99% of the uranium and about 75% of the plutonium are removed from the alumina bed as volatile hexafluorides during two-zone oxidation-fluorination at 450°C.
